Child ADHD Assessments

An ADHD assessment is a structured evaluation designed to determine whether a child meets criteria for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and to identify the impact of symptoms on their daily functioning. The process involves the following steps:

1. Initial Family Consultation
The assessment begins with a consultation session with the child’s parents or guardians. During this meeting, an ADHD screener is administered, and the clinician gathers comprehensive information about the child’s developmental history, family history, and academic background. Parents are encouraged to bring recent report cards and any other relevant school documentation, as understanding the child’s behavior across different environments is essential for an accurate evaluation.

2. Multi-Informant Assessment
If there is sufficient evidence to proceed, the next phase involves collecting information from multiple sources. Evidence-based assessment instruments are used, including standardized questionnaires and rating scales completed by both parents and teachers. These tools help evaluate the child’s behavior in both the home and school settings, which is crucial for diagnosing ADHD.

3. In-Person Child Assessment
At least one in-person session is scheduled with the child. During this session, the clinician observes the child’s behavior, conducts structured tasks as needed, and gathers information from the child’s perspective. This direct assessment provides valuable insight into the child’s attention, impulse control, and activity level.

4. Report Preparation
After all information has been collected, the examiner integrates the findings into a comprehensive report. This report includes background information, results from the questionnaires and observations, a summary of the clinical impressions, and, if appropriate, an ADHD diagnosis. The report also outlines detailed recommendations tailored to support the child both at home and at school.

5. Feedback Session
The process concludes with a feedback session for the parents, and for the child if appropriate based on their age and understanding. During this meeting, the examiner reviews the results, explains the recommendations, and answers any questions the family may have. This ensures families are equipped with the information and strategies needed to support their child’s development and well-being.
