Trauma-Informed Yoga Therapy

Yoga Therapy

Although all yoga is potentially therapeutic and healing, Yoga Therapy is the specific application of yogic tools - postures/exercises, breathwork, meditation techniques, and more - to address an individual’s physical, mental and emotional needs. These sessions are covered under naturopathy through your private insurance.

Yoga Therapists have in-depth, evidence-based training to help them assess and keep their clients safe. They work with you to address your specific goals while considering any limitations you might be experiencing.

The practices your Yoga Therapist recommends could include:

  • Movement including physical posture and/sequences
  • Breathing techniques
  • Meditation or visualization practices
  • Self-Massage/Self Myofascial Release
  • Somatic practices
  • Any combination of tools like these

Yoga therapy meets people where they are, connecting them to their own innate healing potential.

Yoga therapy clients report experiencing improved mood, decreased stress and chronic pain, and more.

Individually tailored yoga therapy can help with:

  • Chronic pain, including low-back pain, arthritis, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and other types of pain such as that associated with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Mental health, including concerns like anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, insomnia, and others
  • Neurological issues and complications of stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Support for illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease
  • Healthy Aging, including osteoporosis and fall prevention
  • Overall well-being

What Can I Expect in a Yoga Therapy Session?

Yoga Therapy sessions are designed specifically with your goals, needs and challenges in mind. Sessions include (1) an initial intake to address your current and previous health history and your goals for the session(s); (2) tailored and individualized Yoga Therapy guidance that includes yoga movement and postures, meditation, breathing and relaxation practices to address your unique goals and challenges; and (3) at-home practices (videos, audio recordings, and/or visual aids) to support you beyond your private session(s).

Is Yoga Therapy Trauma-Informed?

Maria is trained in trauma-informed Yoga Therapy and guides all sessions through a trauma-informed lens, offering agency, choice, and various options of poses, practices, and props to support you in your sessions.  Throughout the session there is time and space for conversation, feedback, questions, and inquiry.
